LEAARC Endorsement

LEAARC endorsement is a formal, non-governmental, peer-review process of voluntary self evaluation. The integrity and good faith of the program, its administration, faculty, and students are essential to the evaluative process. LEAARC honors a diversity of educational models such as distance education, self-paced programs, programs within large and small institutions, college-based programs and those that are not-for-profit and for-profit. Courses endorsed by LEAARC are among the leaders in the field of lactation and breastfeeding education. Students are assured that these programs cover essential topics and skills, have a qualified faculty, and portray themselves honestly in their advertising. LEAARC endorsement provides a reliable indicator of educational quality to employers, insurers, counselors, educators, governmental officials, and the public, based on adherence to established criteria and standards of the profession. Students who seek guidance in the selection of a course look for one that is endorsed by their profession.

LEAARC Approved Lactation Course

LEAARC Approved Logo LEAARC Approval assures students that the course covers the topics identified in the IBLCE Detailed Content Outline and that it is taught by qualified faculty. Beginning January 1, 2017, all LEAARC Approved courses will provide 90 hours of didactic instruction in lactation management. Most LEAARC Approved courses already satisfy this 90-hour requirement. A 90-hour LEAARC Approved lactation course provides the didactic instruction required for certification as an International Board Lactation Consultant. The course has existed for more than one year, has been offered more than one time, and the primary faculty are IBCLC certified. Course approval is identified with the LEAARC Approved logo which may be used in course promotion and student materials. The course may also state that their course is "LEAARC Approved” or “Approved by the Lactation Education Accreditation and Approval Review Committee (LEAARC)". These courses are initially approved for three years and must seek Continuing Approval every three years. See Criteria for Lactation Course Approval.

LEAARC Recognized Breastfeeding Course

In 2016, LEAARC launched a recognition process for courses whose stated mission is to prepare students as breastfeeding educators or counselors. These courses prepare students to educate families and to provide anticipatory guidance, assistance, and support in the normal course of breastfeeding. The course has existed for more than one year, has been offered more than one time, and the primary faculty are IBCLC certified. Courses that receive this designation may promote their recognition with this statement: “This course is recognized by the Lactation Education Accreditation and Approval Review Committee (LEAARC) as a provider of education for breastfeeding educators and counselors.” These courses are initially recognized for three years and must renew recognition every three years. See Criteria for Breastfeeding Course Recognition.

Application Process

Courses seeking initial recognition may contact info@learc.org to request an application. Courses nearing the end of their recognition period will be contacted by LEAARC with an application for an additional three year cycle.
